I try to document my work on the BMW 801 fuel injection pump by taking photos before and after restoration. These pictures are the first in a series illustrating the progress of my work.
Part No. 9-2106.90-20 before... |
... and after restoration in June 1997 |
||
The front part after detachment of the pinions and most of the screws for the fuel injection lines | The front part of the casing after removal of the damaged basis for the de-aerator (...and some hours of polishing!)
Backside cover of the aluminum casing with cam and drive immediately after removal | The cam has been detached, the drive is being cleaned. More recent photo coming up... | April 1998. Test assembly of cam and drive. | Detail of the image on the left. Does anybody know what the code means? |
When detached from the pump, valve No. 5 was amazingly well preserved |
Usually, the valves looked like the one to the right, shown here with a valve already polished
This is how the backside casing looked after removal of the cover on January 3rd, 1997 | Same view after cleaning and removal of tappets before sanding in January 1999 | After sanding - polishing has already begun on the left side |
The part between de-aerator and main pump casing was taken off after the last of the 14 M6-screws had been removed. The picture shows the status immediately after removal. There was a paper seal between this part and the main body, the remains of which can be seen in the photo. The long M6-screws protruding from the cast aluminum part were holding the actual suspension of the de-aerator missing here. Originally, there were ten screws, but those missing here were ejected when the plane crashed. I found them in the main body.
Duration of restoration work so far: 310 hours
